EPPING FOREST: School league tables published

EXAM results remain the best way of measuring a school’s achievement, according to head-teachers.
The most recent table, which ranks secondary schools according to the proportion of pupils achieving five ‘good’ GCSEs – A* to C grades including English and maths, A-level results and a new ‘value-added’ score, which takes into account the academic level children were at when they entered the school.

Debden Park High School in Willingale Road, Loughton, had a value-added score of 1.25 per cent below the national average – the third highest in the district – and it had the second highest proportion of pupils achieving the five or more ‘good’ GCSEsd, at 67 per cent.

La Mare’s exam results make it third worst in England

Saturday 28th January 2012, 2:29PM GMT.

The UK Department of Education has just published its GCSE performance tables, with the accepted benchmark being pupils attaining five A* to C passes in GCSE or equivalent qualifications including English and maths. If St Sampson’s High was included in the list, it would be the 11th worst.
Education has for years insisted that schools in Guernsey were outperforming those in the UK, but in September it was forced to publish individual results.
The latest revisions of those revealed that only 11.5% of students at La Mare and 20.5% at St Sampson’s achieved five GCSE grades A* to C, including English and maths. The English benchmark is 35%.
Education minister Robert Sillars, who took over from Deputy Carol Steere this week, said the results confirmed what was known already and work was under way to improve performance.

Parents storm ministry office in protest against students results
KTS express concern over lack of transparency
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 27: The Education Ministry had distributed secondary school certificates to students of both Science and Art streams on Thu-rsday, but the results were so dismal that a large number of parents stormed the ministry office to express their resentment, reports Al-Rai daily.
The parents claimed that the ministry deliberately set difficult question papers for two reasons: firstly, in retaliation against the demonstrations students staged earlier and secondly, because there are not enough seats in government universities to accommodate all students.
Sources said the parents could not meet any ministry official and were forced to leave the scene.
Furthermore, referring to rumors that the exams will be held again, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Education Affairs Mona Al-Loghani said neither the exams will be conducted again, nor will the papers be re-corrected. She added that the exams were held in proper manner and there was nothing wrong in the mechanism at all.
She called on parents not to pay attention to such rumors and said only students who could not take exams due to medical reasons will be allowed to take them at a later date.

Frustrated students, parents blame ministry for low grades – Mid-term results highly disappointing

As was being speculated, high school mid-term exam results were highly disappointing, with pass percentilesdropping to as much as 59 percent in one subject, according to unofficial statistics. The situation sparked large wave of frustration among 12th grade students and parents, but Ministry of Education (MoE) officials vehemently denied foul play behind the low success rates.
Al-Qabas reported yesterday that Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education Ahmad Al-Mulaifi held a meeting with top MoE officials like Muna Al-Lughani Assistant Undersecretary for Public Location, but without the presence of ministry’s Undersecretary Tamadher Al-Sadairawi and directors of the state’s six educational directorates. Sources noted that instead of discussing the low success rate, the minister “appreciated efforts” made by ministry officials in conducting examinations.

Test scores reveal slight improvement

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing scores for kindergarten through ninth grades in the School District of Beloit have risen slightly in the past two years for most of the grades, and appear to be slowly catching up to the national average.
Superintendent Steve McNeal said out of the eight grades tested, six scored higher than two years ago in both reading and math.

"We showed gains, but we probably haven't shown the gains we've made in the past. We are still in the middle of the moves stemming from this year's reconfiguration and have taken on an increase in students, but we are still doing somewhat better academically," McNeal said.
Director of Curriculum and Instruction Tracy Donich said six out of the eight grade levels tested showed increases, with first, sixth, seventh and eighth grades showing the most significant progress, with more than two point gains.
"We know instructional practices in our 4K and kindergarten are making the most positive difference for our students, along with those instructional changes at fourth grade and up," Donich said.

A veterinarian's story: Raleigh

Published: Friday, January 27, 2012, 6:00 PM

It was a beautiful fall day in Portland with a light frost on the ground, clear skies, and the leaves just beginning to change. I was at work and anticipating a busy day ahead.
Then it happened, an encounter that will be burned into my brain until eternity.
This is when I walked into the exam room and met Raleigh for the first time. He was an 11 year old lab shepherd mix weighing about 50 pounds with clear brown eyes, a mouth that seemed to be perpetually smiling, erect ears and an energetic tail.
His owners: a young, hip, outdoorsy couple had brought Raleigh in to be examined due to some recent weight loss and a lack of appetite.
I examined Raleigh thoroughly and presented the couple with a few treatment options, one of which entails sending blood and urine to the lab for analysis. One of the symptoms Raleigh presented with was jaundice or a yellowish discoloration of the whites of the eyes as well as a yellowish tint to the skin.

Corner prepare for Queen’s exam

CHIMNEY Corner are preparing thenselves for a crucial examination at the hands of Queen’s University this Saturday.
Saturday’s Belfast Telegraph Championship Two results could not have gone any worse for the Antrim men, who lost 3-1 at Sport and Leisure Swifts and then had salt rubbed in that wound with the news that their main relegation rivals Moyola Park had beaten Wakehurst.
“We didn’t really expect that result at all – it came as something of a surprise to us,” admitted Corner secretary John Robinson.
“We’re four points behind Moyola now which is quite a big margin all of a sudden – before the weekend, a draw for us could have taken us level on points with them.
“But you can’t always depend on other results falling your way in football – you have to go out and take care of your own result first and foremost.
“It looked for a while on Saturday that we were in a good position to get something out of the game but it didn’t turn out that way,” added John.

After Independence Bangladesh faced the challenge of meeting the educational needs of mass people. To meet this challenge the necessity for a new mode of education was widely felt. As a sequel to that feeling, the School Broadcasting Pilot Project (SBP) was launched in 1978. Later in 1983, the project was transformed into National Institute of Educational Media and Technology (NIEMT).

Human error to blame for school's GCSE science exam blunder

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Bosses at Backwell School are holding a special meeting with parents to discuss a blunder which left more than 100 students unable to take science GCSEs this week.
Backwell School headteacher Julian Baldwin has written to parents inviting them along to a meeting on Monday night to outline measures being put in place to make sure students do not suffer as a result of an administrative error in the exam entries.
As exclusively revealed in the Evening Post, Year 10 students were told on Friday that they would be unable to take their science GCSE this week because staff had failed to put them in for it.
The embarrassing blunder came to light as youngsters at Backwell School were going through final revision lessons for the exams.
The pupils, aged 14 and 15, are all in special science classes and were due to take the exams in biology and chemistry.
An investigation, by deputy head Emma Yates, has now been launched and the findings will be put in a report, due to go before Mr Baldwin and governors.
Rural schools worst hit by the ‘cheating bug’

Publish Date: Jan 26, 2012
THE announcement of examination results signals a period of joy as images of candidates and their parents jubilating fill the media.
However, there is another sad side that comes with the release of examination results which the public eye never gets to see, of disheartened candidates who did not excel. Then there is this other group of unfortunate candidates whose results are withheld or in worst case scenarios, cancelled. What happens to such candidates?
Last week, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), announced that it had withheld results of 1,040 candidates in the 2011 Primary Leaving Examinations. The board’s executive secretary, Matthew Bukenya, said the results were withheld because of suspected involvement in examination malpractice.
It is a trying time for parents of over 1,000 candidates whose results were withheld pending investigations. The parents have to battle with the uncertainty of not knowing how their children have performed or whether their results will be released.

Namibia: NANSO Dismayed By Results

Windhoek — The Namibia National Student Organisation (NANSO) has expressed concern and dismay over the recent grades 10 and 12 exam results.
Speaking at a meeting to address the issue on Tuesday, newly elected NANSO President, Timotheus Angala, said NANSO is not happy with the outcome of the results and even though there has been a slight improvement in results, it still isn't satisfactory.

West Midlands schools celebrate successful exams year

Teenagers across the West Midlands have proved they are a class act within another successful year for GCSE and A-levels. The class of 2011 post some of the Midlands’ best results, with just under six in 10 Birmingham youngsters achieving the benchmark five or more GCSEs including maths and English. Schools also posted some of their best A-level results yet – with Birmingham independent schools, including King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys and King Edward VI High School for Girls, leading the charge for top-scoring students.

Celebrations over rising exam results

Staff and pupils at a number of county schools are celebrating after seeing their exam results rise in 2011.
According to the education league tables which were released today, 14 schools in the north and east of the county saw their A-Level results rise and 12 schools recorded higher GCSE results.
Kingswood School in Corby saw more children achieving five A* to C grades, including English and mathematics, rise for the third year in a row.
Headteacher David Tristram said: “During the past few years we’ve seen our results rise from 29 per cent to 39 per cent and again last year to 47 per cent. This is down to the hard work of our staff and students and by using targeted intervention with some students to help them.

Shropshire celebrates best-ever GCSE exam results 2012

More children are getting the top grades of A*-C, including maths and English, with the county seeing its best-ever GCSE results in 2011.
The Department for Education tables, released today, show that 59.9 per cent of county pupils achieved five or more of the top grades, including in English and maths – compared to the national figure of 58.2 per cent.
Telford schools, which saw 58 per cent of pupils getting five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths, are among the most rapidly improving in the country.
But national figures show 107 secondary schools in England, including Telford’s Sutherland Business College, did not reach government targets and less than 35 per cent of pupils got at least five C grades at GCSE, including English and maths.
The Corbet School, in Baschurch, saw some of the most improved results in Shropshire, with 73 per cent of its pupils getting five or more A*-C

Superintendents warn that MEAP, MME test results will look different

Published: Thursday, January 26, 2012, 7:30 AM

MEAP and MME scores will look much different when the state releases the results this year.
Jackson County schools are preparing to release the latest round of their students’ Michigan Educational Assessment Program test scores.
It’s safe to say that they’re not going to look like any scores parents have seen before.
While the state Department of Education hasn’t said yet when it will release the MEAP scores to the public, they have been released to the schools. Local superintendents estimate the number of students scoring “proficient” this year will decrease by 50 percent or more.
It’s not due to a change in the test, it’s due to a change from the Michigan Board of Education in the “cut scores” or the cut-off point between what it has determined is proficient and not proficient.
“They are drastic, drastic changes,” said Scott Koziol, superintendent of the Michigan Center School District.
People won’t likely see scores of 80 or 90 this year, Koziol said. In some cases, it could be more like scores of around 40, he said.
“You have to put it into perspective,” Koziol said. “A score of 39 this year does not mean the same thing that a score of 39 did in previous years. The levels of proficiency have changed.”
The state’s goal in raising the bar on the cut scores is to give parents and students a better idea of the student’s readiness for college and to eventually increase the number of students who are adequately prepared for college or a career in a global economy.
The Jackson County Intermediate School District is helping local districts convert their past scores to the current standards so they can accurately compare this year’s scores to previous year’s results and determine what areas need improvement, said Susan Townsend, director of learning services.

Schools producing robots only - Dr Ben

Schools producing robots only - Dr Ben

FORMER Registrar of the Examinations Council of Swaziland Dr. Ben Dlamini says the country’s education is worthless and produces robots.
Dlamini, who was at the helm of the council for 22 years, said he was at pains with the system which he said the country adopted from the British people. Dlamini was on SBIS 2 on Tuesday on the popular radio talk show ‘In Touch’ hosted by Wilton ‘Jazi’ Mamba.
“For 22 years I was unhappy because I was producing robots. The system of education does not produce independent thinkers,” Dlamini lamented.
He said despite noticing the sad situation years ago, when he headed the council, there was nothing he could do to change the system because teachers would be on the roads the next day.
“They want pupils to elicit what they have taught them,” he said.
Dlamini said the current system of education encouraged pupils to memorise things only to regurgitate such during exam time. He said such was driven by the obsession to get the 100% pass rate in external examinations.
